Software has already eaten the world; now what?

A case for open source software

Talk cover

Synopsis

Software has already eaten the world, but what comes next? As developers, we often turn to open source software (OSS) to power our projects, leveraging its flexibility and innovation. Yet, there’s a responsibility that comes with this: sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly of our experiences to help the community navigate which tools work best for specific challenges.

In this talk, we’ll explore how open source software fosters transparency and collaboration while challenging the offerings of proprietary software vendors. We'll discuss how to critically evaluate whether a vendor's product truly delivers a unique value proposition or merely repackages capabilities readily available in OSS tools.

We’ll zoom into the importance of contributing back to the OSS ecosystem by sharing insights gained from real-world use cases—good and bad. By doing so, we empower the community to evolve, creating a virtuous cycle of improvement and innovation.

This talk is a call to action for developers and organizations to engage with open source, sharing their expertise and fostering a culture of trust and accountability in software development. Whether you're a startup or an established enterprise, this session will provide practical insights to navigate the OSS landscape with confidence.
